The demolition...
Under the innocuous-looking green carpet was, not a pad, but a layer of yellow shag carpet with built-in pad glued to the floor. Uggh!!
A long-handled floor scraper got most of the foam off, just leaving the sticky residue. A wallpaper steamer worked well to soften up the adhesive, which then came up with a putty knife. Lots of tedious scraping, but nothing too challenging physically.
We got the closet floor scraped and cleaned up, but needed to bring a better tool to get the larger room taken care of.
8 hours of hands-and-knees tedium got us here. The wood is in very good shape for its age, with no signs of cat pee. It's got a few gouges and scratches, but whatever doesn't sand out we'll just leave in for "character."
Like all the other floors in the house, this one took some drum sanding to harness its "character" (see Living/Dining Room for more). But we finally got there.
On to beautification of the closet. The existing casings were about an inch too narrow for standard 5' bifold doors, so we removed them.
We steamed off six--yes, six--layers of wallpaper, then patched the plaster and primed it.
While below we installed simple bifold doors, scribing the bottoms so they'd open and close on the sloping floor. We added baseboards, vinyl on the floor, and a simple 1/4" plywood cover over the plumbing access hole.
The walls brightened significantly with Valspar Rising Tide, the trim was freshened up with Sherwin Williams Snowbound, and the ceiling got a clean coat of Sherwin Williams ceiling paint. Note the non-private view of the front porch that needs to be remedied.
A top-down-bottom-up shade from Steve's Blinds provides privacy and light at the same time. A new duvet cover adds texture, and the pillows and throw add a shot of color.
Let the decorating begin! We took cream curtains and dressed them up with a butter yellow border, hanging them on a silver rod with glass ball ends. Loving these nearly 9' ceilings.
We opted for a simple muslin curtain over the top-of-closet storage, adding a strip of yellow ribbon to tie in the color with the rest of the room. The bifold doors will get glass knobs (ordered).

The chandelier deserves special mention, as it's the centerpiece of the room. It's a vintage chandelier purchased from ebay and refurbished. See details on the restoration here.
